Crying is your baby’s only way of communicating with you. At first, it can be difficult and distressing for you, especially if you are a new parent but remember a large part of parenting is trial and error and you will soon learn to anticipate and interpret his needs. It is important to remember that no baby has ever cried himself to death. You need to know how to interpret what each cry means and you will know this very quickly if you spend time with him.
Reasons why babies cry
1. I am hungry
2. I am wet or dirty
3. I am too cold/ too hot
4. I am not comfortable
5. I want to be cuddled
6. I don’t feel good
7. I can’t take it anymore
8. Where is everybody?
9. None of the above
If your little one is wailing, just work your way down the list and you should find the cure.
Hungry cry
When you touch the sides of his mouth, he will turn towards your fingers searching for food. The crying usually stops once food is in the mouth but some babies will continue complaining so keep on feeding. Sometimes baby will cry instead of closing the mouth so you may have to help him by gently pushing the lower jaw up to close the mouth.
Wet or dirty
Some babies are particular and do not like very wet or soiled nappies and will cry to let you know when the nappy is full and need changing. Once you have changed the nappy they are all smiles again. Others are not bothered until you smell it or when you pick them up.
Too cold or too hot
All babies dislike being naked and they cannot sleep if they are cold especially when they have cold feet. Sometimes swaddling or just putting a cloth over the feet will stop them crying. Sometimes a pacifier may help. Most babies are less likely to complain about being too hot so you will only recognize this when you see that his face is flushed or that he is sweaty.
Not comfortable
This is usually due to position or something that is irritating him. As the baby grows bigger, he can push himself until he is wedged against the cot and needs to be repositioned.
Need to be cuddled
Babies need a lot of cuddling and they vary a lot in how much they want to be held. There is no such thing as spoiling your baby by cuddling her. They grow up so fast and before you know it, they are too big to carry and cuddle. Some babies just want to be by your side without being held.
Do not feel good
The cry of a sick baby is very distinct from the cry of hunger or frustration and you will recognize when your baby does not sound right and needs to be taken to the doctor.
Can’t take anymore
Babies can become over stimulated from the noise and being passed from hand to hand and crying is the only way to say “I have enough. ” Some babies may even have nightmares during the night from over stimulation.
Too silent
Babies do not live in a silent world in the womb. Many new parents try to make it so silent that they whisper and tiptoe when baby is asleep then they wonder why baby wakes up crying. They sleep better when there is soothing sounds so keep the radio on and let the DJ bore him to sleep.
None of the above
Many newborns have periods of fussiness when it is difficult to soothe them and you just cannot figure out what to do. This has happened to me a couple of times and my last resort was to take Marie to her doctor. The moment we walked through the door she smiled and cooed at the doctor who looked at me as if I was an idiot; and, I had to pay him RM75. 00 to be told that there was nothing wrong with her especially when I am a so-called ‘expert’ on baby care.
What is colic?
Colic is a label for a pattern of crying in a healthy, well-fed infant under 3 months of age that has no explanation. Colicky babies cry a lot more than others and can be difficult or impossible to soothe. The baby’s crying usually intensifies between 6 and 8 weeks of age, and then diminishes when he is 3 months old. Colic means that even though your baby is healthy, your life for the next couple of weeks is going to be tough. It is often associated with too much wind in the tummy.
Some signs that tell you that your baby has colic:
What can you do?
The best way to deal with colic is to stay calm and be patient. Although it can be very distressing to hear your baby crying for hours on end every day, it will pass eventually. Parental anxiety does not cause colic. On the other hand, colic can stress parents out, and an anxious parent will find it hard to soothe a fussy baby.
Some steps that you may want to try.
Look after yourself too
A colicky baby can leave you feeling drained and exhausted which only adds to the problem. Once you know when the crying will start, you can try to plan your day around the time your baby starts crying. It is a good idea to eat your meal earlier so that you have plenty of energy to get through the difficult period. Relax yourself mentally and physically, as your baby will know if you are stressed and this makes it harder for him to settle down. Give yourself a break from time to time by asking someone else to take over. Knowing that you are not alone can be a great help.
Good luck!
t is no longer a surprise for us that there is vast variety of different baby items available in the market today. We have been exposed to different commercials for baby items, and realize that all of these baby products are not created equally. As a matter fact, some of them may actually harmful to the children in one way or another. That is the reason why it is important to choose baby items carefully and make sure you are getting exactly what you think you are getting.
You can apply this idea whenever you go out shopping for baby gifts, or if there is a baby shower you you need to attend to. Instead of taking it lightly, an excellent way to show to the new parents that you really care for their infant is to give ideal baby gifts, such as organic baby items. Organic baby products are made of pure organic materials with no added chemicals, which are harmful to babies’ health. You want your gift to be as safe as possible, and by going with something organic is an excellent choice to consider.
If there is one thing that baby items get exposed to, it is when being put into a baby’s mouth. Babies tend to put whatever things they have into their mouth. In fact, if you give a baby something to touch or to hold, the first thing they are going to do with it is to put it directly into their mouth. Therefore, it is important to always make sure that whatever you give to the baby should be created from organic materials. By doing this, it simply shows how you care about the baby and that you are providing something safe for them.

Recent media attention concerning chemicals in baby products has caused much concern and alarm. The No More Toxic Tub report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a non-profit agency whose goal is to bring attention to harmful chemicals in our skin care products, informs us that many of the baby products that we know, love, and have used for many years contain cancer-causing (carcinogenic) chemicals, specifically, 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. In addition to these two harmful chemicals, parents have to worry about the presence of phthalates and parabens in their personal care products as well as their baby’s. These chemicals are not federally regulated here in the United States, but have been banned in other countries. 1,4-dioxane has been banned in Europe and formaldehyde is banned in Japan and Sweden. The U. S. and Europe have banned three phthalates (DEHP, DBP, and BBP) from children’s toys.
1,4-dioxane is not a product added intentionally, but instead is considered a contaminant and therefore is not required to be listed on product labels. This chemical is used as a foaming agent and found in many of the products that we use today, such as shampoos, liquid soaps, deodorants, laundry detergents, toothpastes and much more. 1,4-dioxane is readily absorbed into the bloodstream potentially causing damage to the central nervous system, liver, kidneys and may even result in death.
Formaldehyde exposure occurs everyday in the air that we breath and in the food that we eat. Formaldehyde is a colorless, odorless gas which can cause throat, nose, skin, and eye irritation. Exposure can cause coughing, wheezing, watery eyes, itching, and skin irritations. Formaldehyde exposure has been linked to allergies and asthma in children. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies formaldehyde as a carcinogen and high levels of this chemical have been linked to the development of nose, lung, and brain cancer as well as leukemia.
Phthalates are another man-made chemical found in many of our personal care products. Phthalates are used to make plastics flexible and used in many fragrance oils to help prolong the fragrance’s scent. A study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that many young infants are frequently exposed to phthalates in common baby lotions, powders, and shampoos thereby making them more vulnerable to the developmental and reproductive adverse effects of these chemicals. Phthalates have been linked to hormonal changes, birth defects, reproductive abnormalities in baby boys (i. e. low sperm count, testicular cancer, deformities of the penis), and damage to the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
Parabens are used as a preservative in many cosmetics, foods and pharmaceutical products. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen and when absorbed through the skin, parabens have been linked to breast cancer and male reproductive abnormalities.
Recently, even natural and organic products have been shown to contain these worrisome chemicals. Bottom line, read the label. Here is a list of the worrisome ingredients to watch for in you and your baby’s products:
1. Avoid products containing “Fragrance”. Oddly enough, the various chemicals present under the name “fragrance” do not have to be listed individually, thereby hiding them under the broad category “fragrance” (this is where common phthalates hide).
2. Avoid products containing the following ingredients which may contain 1,4-dioxane:
A. PEG compounds (example: PEG-80)
B. Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS)
C. “cetearth”
E. “xynol”
F. “oleth”
G. . polyethylene
3. Avoid products containing the term “phthalate” (example: monoethyl phthalate).
4. Avoid plastics that contain the
recycling number “3″ which is a possible source for phthalates.
5. Avoid products containing the word paraben.
6. Avoid other worrisome ingredients:
A. BHA
B. Oxybenzone
C. Triclosan
D. Boric acid
E. Sodium borate
F. Tolune
G. Triethanolamine
H. Dyes
I. Methylchloroisothiazolinone
J. Methylisothiazolinone
K. Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate
L. Benzyl alcohol
M. Isopropyl alcohol
N. Oxybenzone
7. Review product safety ratings on the
Skin Deep database.
Sure, there is only small amounts of these chemicals in our baby products which are stated to be below the acceptable levels, but isn’t it possible that repeated exposure over a life-time can increase the risk for cancer? Here are some sad cancer statistics:
A. Cancer is the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 15.
B. Cancer kills more children than any other disease.
C. The median age for a child with cancer is 6 years old.
Maybe, just maybe, we can help reduce these sad and shocking numbers by becoming more informed and making better choices in the products that we use, the food that we eat and the water that we drink.
There’s more to bottle feeding than you may realize. Get the inside scoop here.
1. Change your baby’s diaper before the feeding. This helps wake your baby for the feeding and allows for undisturbed sleep after the feeding.
2. Prepare your baby’s daily amount of formula ahead of time. You can:
Mix the desired amount of formula beforehand and put it the fridge. Then when you are ready to use the milk, place it in a bowl of warm water to take the chill off. Prepared powder formula may be kept in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours after mixed.
Pre-measure both the powder and water in separate containers (a sealed container for the powder and a baby bottle for the water). Make enough for the day/night. Then, when you are ready to feed your baby, mix the two together. This eliminates the need to warm the milk.
3. Use boiled water or bottled water when mixing your baby’s formula. When using boiled water, allow for the water to come back to room temperature before mixing with the formula.
4. Never warm formula in the microwave. This can cause the milk to be very hot in some areas. Always warm milk by placing the bottle in a bowl or cup of warm water. Be sure to test the milk on the inner aspect of your wrist to ensure temperature safety. Perfect formula temperature is when you are unable to feel hot or cold.
5. Discard any unused milk one hour after the feeding. Bacteria from your baby’s saliva begin to rapidly multiply when left at room temperature.
6. Make sure to burp your baby frequently during feedings.
If your baby does not spit up frequently, wait until your baby stops sucking from the bottle and then burp your baby. The gas bubbles make your baby think that he/she is full and will cause them to stop drinking the milk.
Once your baby lets out a good burp, he/she will probably resume eating.
If your baby tends to spit up frequently or has colic, try burping your baby more frequently, approximately after every half an ounce or so.
7. For a sleepy newborn or preemie:
Remove blankets and hat. Babies love to sleep when they are cozy and warm. If that doesn’t do the trick, undress your baby.
Rub your baby’s back along his/her spine.
Tickle your baby’s feet.
Wipe your baby’s face and chest with a cool, damp cloth.
Hold your baby on your lap with your non-dominate hand supporting your baby’s head, neck, and shoulder. Some babies tend to sleep when they are snuggled in mommy or daddy arms during feedings.
Remember, practice makes perfect.
